Board of Directors

The ROAV Board of Directors is a group of passionate volunteers who are elected by our members at our AGM.

Most directors serve a 2 year term. The President serves 3 years: 1 as Vice President, 1 as President, and 1 as Past President.

Hugh Fletcher - President

Hugh Fletcher has been riding competitively since 1980 and has been part of mountain biking since its early days. After moving to Canada in 1986, he transitioned into mountain biking and has seen the sport evolve into what it is today.

Over the years, he has ridden alongside many of British Columbia’s top riders—often being lapped, as he jokes—but has remained consistently involved in the sport. Hugh continues to ride and values mountain biking not only as a sport, but as something that benefits youth and overall well-being.

For him, nothing quite compares to a good ride to clear the head. Reach out to Hugh with general inquires at roav.president@gmail.com.

Nick Holatko - Vice President

Nick Holatko grew up in the Comox Valley and learnt how to ride mountain bikes in the early days of the Cumberland mountain bike network.  After university Nick has spent the last decade working in forestry as a Tree Planter and doing all things Silviculture.  This job has given him the chance to travel all over BC and ride a plethora of mountain bike networks.  Nick came to Port Alberni to settle down in 2022 and has been an active part of the ROAV mountain bike scene ever since.  Nick has been busy out on the trails digging and on the Strava leader boards.  You will probably recognize Nick by his best trail companion Tony the Husky either ripping laps or down in the dirt pit.  Nick joined ROAV in 2024 after spending 3 years as Treasurer and helping establish the Ucluelet Mountain Bike Association. Nick brings a bunch of passion to the board with experience navigating land use agreements and securing funding for major trail projects.  As your current Vice-President and 2027 years President elect, Nick plans to continue with the current momentum of the club and keep the pedal to metal on trail stewardship and land use agreements.

Clay Hawkins - Treasurer

Clay Hawkins grew up splitting his time between Bamfield and Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. He discovered his passion for mountain biking in middle school and spent several years racing Island Cup downhill events across Vancouver Island.

After high school, Clay completed his apprenticeship and earned his Journeyman Marine Mechanic ticket. He later switched careers, moving to Vancouver to work as a firefighter with the City of Vancouver. While living there, he rediscovered his love for mountain biking and enjoyed riding the world-class trail networks in the North Shore, Coquitlam, Squamish, Powell River, and beyond.

In early 2021, Clay moved back to the Alberni Valley. His motivation to join ROAV comes from his deep passion for mountain biking and his strong desire to help turn Port Alberni into a destination with its own world-class trail networks — just like the ones he rode in the cities listed above.

When he’s not turning wrenches at Breakers Marine, you’ll find him lapping his favorite trails behind the candy store with his loyal dog Bobo, or hot-lapping blue flow trails with his wife Sasha and their toddler riding shotgun.

Dylan Glaser - Trails Coordinator

Dan Dyck - Secretary

Daniel Dyck was born in Victoria and raised in Port Alberni. He works in a support role with youth and adults in care.

He spent much of his teens mountain biking and rediscovered the sport in his mid-20s. His interest in mountain biking, recreation, and the outdoors is closely tied to his belief in their role in supporting youth development and contributing to the growth of the Alberni Valley.

Daniel has worked across British Columbia and Alberta before returning to Vancouver Island, where he attended Vancouver Island University and transitioned into his current career. He later purchased a home in Port Alberni.

He has served on the ROAV board since 2019 and contributes to the organization and communication of the club.

Our Trails Coordinator Dylan grew up in Fall City, WA and moved to Squamish for Uni when he was 18. He heard there were good trails there so figured he would just ride if he couldn’t make friends! After undergrad he worked a mix of fisheries and mountain bike trailbuilding jobs, bouncing between western Washington and BC. After doing a few years of paid trail work (i.e., moving lots of dirt around on green trails), he decided to take fisheries science more seriously, spent a few years in Calgary for grad school, and is now a fisheries biologist for DFO. When he’s not at his desk modelling salmon population dynamics, you can find him at the bike park, cleaning rocks on Scorpa, making sure his freezer is full of Sockeye, lapping Updog-Portal Bermy with his 1 year old in the shotgun seat, or trying to convince landowners of new trail plans. He’s called Port Alberni home since 2022.

Jeff McCauley was raised in the Alberni Valley and continues to live there with his family. He spends much of his time on the local trails, often riding with his dog Gizmo or with his sons.

As ROAV’s Events Coordinator, Jeff organizes events that bring the riding community together and support the continued growth of cycling in the Valley.
